Hemnet’s Buyer Barometer October 2024: More Expect Stable Prices Ahead

Price expectations among homebuyers are stabilizing at high levels in October. The proportion of buyers who believe in rising prices is decreasing slightly, as is the proportion who expect falling prices. Instead, more people now believe in stable prices. This is according to the results from Hemnet's Buyer Barometer in October..
Of the surveyed buyers, 46 percent said they expect housing prices to rise over the next six months. This is a decrease of 2 percentage points compared to the September survey. Similarly, the proportion of buyers expecting falling housing prices has decreased by 2 percentage points, from 13 percent in September to 11 percent in October. This represents a tied record low for the share of those expecting a price decline. Overall, this results in a net score of +35 percentage points for Hemnet's Buyer Barometer, unchanged from September.
The increase in October comes from the share of those expecting stable housing prices. Of the surveyed buyers, 43 percent indicated that they believe prices will remain unchanged over the next six months. This is an increase of 5 percentage points compared to September.
Percentage of buyers expecting:
Increasing prices: 45.7 percent (48.1% in the previous month)
Decreasing prices: 11.0 percent (13.5% in the previous month)
Unchanged prices: 43.3 percent (38.4% in the previous month)
Erik Holmberg, market Analyst at Hemnet, commented:
“The market continued to show strength in September, with rising prices and more sales. After the interest rate cuts in May and August, we saw clear effects on both price trends and the housing market in general. We will have to wait and see if the most recent cut has the same noticeable effect, but it doesn’t seem to have impacted price expectations to any significant extent this time”.
Hemnet’s Buyers’ Barometer went out to 2,185 respondents between 1 and 3 October.
